Fifteen-year-old Stacy questions the strange world of high school, love, her role in a harsh universe, and life, in Normalish.
People tell you high school’s so great and wonderful, but they’re lying. It’s mostly horrible and full of disappointment. It sucks. Your best friend abandons you. The jerk you’re in love with pretends to be into you, and then the big dump. The boy you’ve really clicked with as a friend decides to go all crushy over you, so you break his heart just like yours was — smashed into little pieces. Your sister goes mental, and you get involved with a guy who’s even crazier than she is (who you know is a very bad idea, but you do it anyway). Math only adds another stink of failure to the whole thing.
High school blows. Just ask freshman Stacy. She’d want you to know.
To be perfectly honest, in the beginning of Normalish by Margaret Lesh, I was a bit bored and thought the book was going to fall short from what it could. However, it quickly proved me very wrong and it wasn’t all about a teenager just going through normal things and being depressed how some are.
Stacy is the main character who is 15 years old and goes through quick a hard time for her freshman year in high school. My freshman year was nowhere near as eventful as her was, thankfully. The first problems she really has is boys. Her best friend is a guy, Chad, and he ends up liking her and kissing her but she doesn’t feel that way so she lets him down and he really takes it the wrong way and they stop being friends. The guy who she likes does go after her at a party but that falls flat and I was sitting there thinking when she was going through it, what did you expect with a guy like that?!
Then things start to get a bit more interesting with her sister, Becca. She is acting a bit weird and Stacy is worried about her but has no idea what to do, the same as Becca’s boyfriend, Roman. I didn’t see the twist with the sister but I was really interested in it.
During the whole sister thing (I don’t want to give any of it away) Stacy meets an older guy that also has some problems similar to Becca. They become kind of a thing and I have to admit I was really happy, until they weren’t together any more. I admit I cried a bit at that and the things that followed. It was really sad and I didn’t expect it totally.
The book ended really good though and overall I really enjoyed the characters and the story. It was a pretty quick read (would have been quicker if I didn’t do a lot other things in between) and it didn’t disappoint for me.
