Lately pickings have been slim, and she has grown so weak that her shield of invisibility is slipping. As the servant of a demon who eats embarrassment she already feels like she's the laughing stock of the demonic world. But the scorn of someone who thinks that Hawaiian shirts are the height of cool is the least of her worries.

A powerful fear demon is dead set on making her his slave, a position that carries seriously short life expectancy.

She has no friends.

No powers.

No clue.

Her only hope of escaping a life of terror lies in stealing a grimoire she's never seen from the clutches of a vindictive group of master demons.

The Secret Eater by Ros Jackson is a very short novella about demons and what one, Kenssie, has to go through to get her magic back and not become the thrall of another demon. The story started out really fun as well as funny but around the half way mark it kind of stopped being humorous and was a bit more quickly done. I find that problem a lot with novellas in that there isn’t enough time in the book to make it descriptive or a good ending most of the time.

I liked Kenssie enough but I didn’t really care about what happened to her in the end sadly. The book has a great plot to make it a fantastic book and perhaps just not a novella. If there was more time in the story to be a bit more descriptive of the people/demons then maybe I would have gotten into it more.

Don’t get me wrong, there was plenty of good in this book that I enjoyed such as the convocation that they had was super interesting and also the evolution that the demons could go through if they wanted? I would have liked to seen more of that but I understand there was no more time.

The ending was lacking to me. In fact when I read the last page and it ended I was a bit surprised because it didn’t seem like an ending.

However, this was a good afternoon read for something quick and having demons in it and the powers that they possess.

QUOTES:

“We can be anywhere, remember that.”

“Are you intellectually subnormal? Tick yes if someone had to explain those words to you.”

“How many times in the last century have you had to poop? Did anyone have to help you with this?”

Q: School is out! What is your favorite Summer Reading book?

Well, since I don’t just have books that I read during summer there are subjects that give the vibe of summer like a good road trip. The book that strikes me of road trip/summer feel would have to The Edge of Never by J.A Redmerski. While it deals with some tough subjects the whole road trip screams summer to me and it’s a fabulous book.

Another book that screams summer is Just One Day by Gayle Forman. Again, not a light summery book but one that I consider having a summer-like feel to it.

So, what about you and your favorite summer reading book?

Joel Cranston shouldn't exist. He just doesn't know that yet. He's lived a pretty normal life for the last sixteen years. If you consider being almost seven feet tall and good at about every sport you've ever played normal. Normal ends the day Newstead shows up with an invitation to come to their school.

the school.

Newstead is a private school in Central Vermont by the Green Mountains. It's a great place to hide a few hundred people who shouldn't exist while you train them to be tomorrow's rulers, tomorrow's dictators, tomorrow's gods.

the unexpected.

Rachel Newell thinks she's just passing through. She never stays any place more than four months, and with Newstead so close to Weston, she has even more reason to make this her shortest stop ever. The last thing she expects is to have a reason to stay.

Together Rachel and Joel uncover the truth behind what is
the newstead project.

The Newstead Project by Melanie Schulz was kind of slow and very mysterious. Mysterious to the point where it made it hard to understand what was going on or why. The first person you meet is Joel. Joel lives with his mom in a rundown apartment and he doesn’t know his father or who he is. He isn’t supposed to be alive as it says in the blurb but it’s not really explained. I think it was maybe an abortion that maybe didn’t work? Joel’s mom works two jobs and wants Joel to be able to get a scholarship and out of the life they live.

One day Joel gets that chance when someone from Newstead comes and offers him a full scholarship. Naturally he has to take it. That is when he starts to realize how different he is from everyone in Newstead.

Rachel moves around a lot with her Aunt and cousin. She works where ever she can until it is time to move again.

The romance between Joel and Rachel seemed super fast and a bit forced. She wouldn’t give him the time of day and then all of a sudden a couple weeks later she is telling him that she loves him? It just seemed a bit awkward.

I enjoyed the mood at Newstead even though Joel was being iced out, I enjoyed the whole atmosphere of it as well as Rachel’s home life. I kind of wished there was a bit more of how Newstead worked and I really wanted more between Joel and Steven. Steven seemed like he could have been a great ally for Joel.

The field training exercise seemed like a huge part of the ending but it felt like it ended just as quickly as it started which was a disappointed me a lot. It just fell flat with all the build up that happened for it.

The ending was kind of interesting and seemed to be where the story shined and really caught my interest. Because of the ending I would look at reading the second book when it comes out.

QUOTES:

“My God. That ass…”

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

I live in Upstate New York with my husband and three children, where I?ve pretty much been planted my entire life. Which is fine, because it?s beautiful here. My only complaint is that most people assume that New York means NYC, which it doesn?t. There. I?ve done my part in exposing the truth.
Truth. The truth is I?m not a writer; storyteller maybe, but not a writer. It wasn?t something I spent years dreaming of, or even what I went to school for. I?m a nurse. I love being a nurse. So why write? I don?t know. I do know when it started, though. September 3, 2010. I know this because I nature journal, and on that day Joel made it into my notes. I guess that?s fitting. Someone like him needed to be birthed out in the woods.
If you were to meet me, and I hope someday you do, you would not connect me with this story. I?m a wife, a mother, a nurse. The person who wrote this should?ve been a guy, first off, secondly he should be some militaristic strategist; that?s who you?d expect to see if you were to come to a book signing, not me. But I?m there, in every line. So if I don?t have the good fortune to meet you in person, I hope to see you in THE NEWSTEAD PROJECT.

By sixteen she?s street smart and savvy, assisting her mother, the renowned medium Marguerite Van Housen, in her stage show and séances, and easily navigating the underground world of magicians, mediums and mentalists in 1920?s New York City. Handcuffs and sleight of hand illusions have never been much of a challenge for Anna. The real trick is keeping her true gifts secret from her opportunistic mother, who will stop at nothing to gain her ambition of becoming the most famous medium who ever lived. But when a strange, serious young man moves into the flat downstairs, introducing her to a secret society that studies people with gifts like hers, he threatens to reveal the secrets Anna has fought so hard to keep, forcing her to face the truth about her past. Could the stories her mother has told her really be true? Could she really be the illegitimate daughter of the greatest magician of all?

Born of Illusion by Teri Brown is a young adult paranormal story about Anna Van Housen. Anna is a talented magician and her and her mother have a show in the 1920′s which showcases their talents. They also hold seances which wasn’t as big of a part in the story as I would have liked it to be. In fact, the seances not being in it but two times was really a downer as I was interested in them and thought that they were the best parts of the book.

Anna was likeable enough as a main character. She has to take care of her mother more than someone should and is also dealing with her psychic powers which seem to be getting stronger around a guy that she’s just met, Cole. There is a is she or isn’t she scenario with her being Houdini’s illegitimate daughter. It is never told either way and remains a mystery even at the end.

I have to say that I think this story would have been better if it was about 100 pages less than what it was. It just seem to be drawn out and then the “action” parts were not as good as the build up to them. I thought I had some parts figured out but I hadn’t which was good, I hate figuring out books.

All in all, the book was good. I wasn’t on the edge of my seat excited about it and I didn’t quite enjoy it as much as I thought I would but it was a good read. I just wish that more of the talking to the dead was in it and also more of her abilities.

The cover though I must say that I was drawn to it from the beginning. It’s a gorgeous cover and the font is pretty amazing.

And there?s Rowen Sterling.

After numbing pain for the past five years with boys, alcohol, and all-around apathy, she finds herself on a Greyhound bus to nowhere Montana the summer after she graduates high school. Her mom agreed to front the bill to Rowen?s dream art school only if Rowen proves she can work hard and stay out of trouble at Willow Springs Ranch. Cooking breakfast at the crack of dawn for a couple dozen ranch hands and mucking out horse stalls are the last things in the world Rowen wants to spend her summer doing.

Until Jesse Walker saunters into her life wearing a pair of painted-on jeans, a cowboy hat, and a grin that makes something in her chest she?d thought was frozen go boom-boom. Jesse?s like no one else, and certainly nothing like her. He?s the bright and shiny to her dark and jaded.

Rowen knows there?s no happily-ever-after for the golden boy and the rebel girl?happily-right-now is a stretch?so she tries to forget and ignore the boy who makes her feel things she?s not sure she?s ready to feel. But the more she pushes him away, the closer he seems to get. The more she convinces herself she doesn?t care, the harder she falls.

When her dark secrets refuse to stay locked behind the walls she?s kept up for years, Rowen realizes it?s not just everyone else she needs to be honest with. It?s herself

Lost & Found by Nicole Williams is a well written, romantic, heart-wrenching, emotional story. I was sucked in from the beginning and found myself falling in love with all of the characters, even the horse, Sunny.

Rowen is naturally a messed up teen who goes to work on a ranch to earn her mom paying for her art school. It’s a tough transition for Rowen because she is pretty much in stereotypical Gothic attire when she goes to Montana and everyone else there is pretty much in western wear, cowboy hats, tight jeans, the works. She adapts really well and I liked that she didn’t fight making changes to her wardrobe so that she would be safer and more comfortable working around the ranch.

When she gets picked up from the Greyhound station we meet Jesse. A sexy, intelligent cowboy that I would like to eat up myself. The description of Jesse let me picture him well and I have to say that he would rank up there in the list of awesome book boyfriends. He is very sweet and also doesn’t let Rowen give him any crap which I absolutely loved. It was a breathe of fresh air for the guy to not take anything from the girl as well as vice versa.

Rose, Jesse’s mom was a great maternal character that was there for all her kids and took Rowen under her wing like it’s second nature. I loved that woman a lot. There is no way that you wouldn’t. Rowen and Jesse didn’t fight their attraction and they didn’t hide it from everyone but, Rowen did have moments that she felt she wasn’t good enough for someone like Jesse and this had to do with her past and something that had happened that made everything she did from 13 years old and snowballed. I didn’t even see the reason coming but it’s a pretty darn good one to have flipped out and changed who you are.

The thing that I enjoyed best about Lost & Found was that Rowen didn’t run away from Jesse and Jesse didn’t run away from Rowen. There was no break up for no reason scene except one and it didn’t last long. No moping, crying, self-loathing and you know what? I loved it because most books have the inevitable break-up scene before they get back together and one of them figures out that they really do deserve to be loved.

Rowen’s development and self-discovery was very good too. I like how she grew from the beginning of the book into a stronger person in the end of the book. It goes to show that with a positive environment that you are able to make changes even though in the beginning you might be thinking that you don’t deserve them or that you don’t want them. I really liked her growth.

I was excited about this book based solely on the fact that Nicole Williams wrote it but now, I am excited about it because it’s just a fantastic, fast paced story with great visuals and wonderful eye candy. This is a quick read only because I devoured it so fast. I had to pace myself at the end because I didn’t want it to be over! This is definitely going to be a book people are going to want to read and that people are going to love.

The only thing that I really didn’t care for in this book was that Garth was brought into it but you don’t really learn about him much and I kind of want to. Perhaps we’ll get a book about Garth Black? I’d read it! I’d also read another one with Rowen and Jesse in a heartbeat.

QUOTES:

“Just because one person’s problem is less traumatic than another’s doesn’t mean they’re required to hurt less”

“We all have secrets, Rowen. Every last person on the planet. And you know what else? We all experience the same kinds of things. We just go through them at different times and to different degrees.”

“We all want to open up to someone, Rowen. The hard part is finding someone we trust enough to open up to. That person we’re not afraid of to let into the darkest parts of our world.”

“Every morning we get a chance to be different. A chance to change. A chance to be better. Your past is your past. Leave it there.”

“Jesse, why do you like me?” It made no sense to me. None at all. His hand settled along my jawline. Slowly lifting my head until I looked straight at him, his eyes blazed. “Why do you think I shouldn’t?”
